The Music of the Wall
A chorus of activity amidst the old stone
The rhythmic hum of mumbling men sets the slow patterned beat
It’s the bass – the foundation of the music
The chorus grows with harmonious melodies
The high-pitched accents flowing from the hearts of women
Seem to elevate the music in a crescendo of reality
Hope. Pain. Love. G-d.
This is the backdrop.
The curtain of creation.
Can you feel the music?
As the beats flow freely. Richly. Constantly.
The scene before the curtain evolves.
Rich with activity.
A bride and groom walk in the courtyard
They elevate the music with their simcha.
The children running, playing, laughing
Reassuring us that the music will continue.
The voice of the broken ones sprinkled throughout the chorus
Bring depth through their haunting tunes.
Tourists with cameras. Posing and waving.
They make-believe they’re part of the audience.
Until they pick up a sheet and begin to sing through a tune
written on paper, tucked away in the wall for the Conductor.
And the people walking and wandering
Curiously disengaged from the music.
They each have a part in this chorus.
Imagine the music, if everyone sang
together.
